The argument
Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, kept private notes-to-self that became Meditations. The thesis isn't a system but a practice: wake up each day, remind yourself of what's in your control and what isn't, accept the day as it comes, do the work in front of you, treat people as fellow citizens of nature, and don't waste energy on what cannot be otherwise. The work was internal; the writing was for himself; the result was a manual for living through difficulty.

Most leadership books are written by people who succeeded and want to teach. Meditations was written by an emperor who was constantly failing — at war, at peace, at managing his court, at his own equanimity — and who needed daily reminders to stay sane. For founders, this is the difference. It's not advice from someone who figured it out; it's notes from someone who kept slipping and writing his way back to ground.
The Stoic operating system is austere — focus only on what's in your control; accept what isn't; do your work; treat others as fellow strugglers — but it's resilient. It doesn't depend on circumstances going well. For first-time founders, who are repeatedly subject to circumstances they cannot control, the Stoic practice is the most direct route to a sustainable inner life. Persistence isn't endurance through gritted teeth; it's a daily resetting to what actually matters.

Before reading email, before Slack, before any input from the world: 5 minutes alone, with a notebook.
Write three things, in this order:
'What is in my control today, and what is not?' List 2–3 things in each column. Make the line clear.
'What difficulties will I encounter today, and how will I meet them?' Pre-meditate. The difficult customer. The hard conversation. The meeting that will go sideways. Imagine each, decide your response in advance.
'What does today ask of me, given that I won't be alive forever?' Not goals. Not productivity. What action would I be at peace with, if today were the last day I had?
Then begin the day. You will fail at this on most days — that's the point. Marcus failed at his own discipline constantly; the practice is in returning to it, not in mastering it.
